now you can make momofuku milk bar’s crack pie in half the time. the cowboy cookie oat crust is already premade/crumbled in the kit for you. this is dangerous.

so i made this Julia’s Best Banana Bread from Bon Appetit last night. it lives up to its name.
disclaimer: i didn’t follow the recipe exactly. I added a cup of chocolate chips to the batter…but doesn’t that really count as an ‘improvement’ anyway?

ice cream…you can hold in your hand and eat. sort of reminds me of mochi but now incredibly high brow in france. apparantly you can make the outside skin taste like anything and even put cheese or yogurt inside. thoughts?

tonight’s dinner to celebrate my friend moving into her new apartment :

iraqi yellow spice-rubbed chicken : Saveur Magazine (http://goo.gl/2wUoi)

- unless you cook with exotic spices a lot, odds are you won’t have most of the 14 spices that go into this dish (rose hips, fenugreek, sumac, cardamom pods) but the smell is mind blowing.

confetti corn : Ina Garten (http://goo.gl/GDj1Qf)

-corn is $0.20/ear this week…totally not middle eastern but who cares.

flatbread & wine

frozen lemon gingersnap pie : Gourmet Magazine (http://goo.gl/Ks0ctb)

-this is without a doubt one of the best tasting desserts I have ever made, though I’m deconstructing it this time…serving it as a lemon ice cream with a gingersnap crumble. or you could just make the ice cream by itself…it is the best lemon ice cream i’ve ever had.

recipes from the past that should have stayed dead.

this 1920s recipe for “candle salad” made an appearance as a holiday recipe in Betty Crocker’s Cook Book for Boys and Girls (1957). in fact, certain recipes suggest serving with cream or mayonnaise dripping down the banana to simulate “melted wax.” i’m sure those dirty minded of us out there can come up with a great deal of jokes regarding just about everything in this picture. find out more here.

i highly recommend this granola recipe from the blog Love and Lemons (origin of the beautiful photos above), which not only tastes amazing but couldn’t be easier to prepare. toss ingredients, bake in oven, enjoy. while it does taste great plain, the serving suggestion with yogurt, honey and pomegranate seeds is downright delicious and I won’t deny I’m addicted. will definitely be making my own granola from here on out!

if anyone passes through Pasadena, CA…I highly recommend the churros and Dulce de Leche Latte from Amara Chocolate and Coffee. These churros came with white, milk and dark chocolate for dipping…utterly wonderful. However…if you like mochas…no place does them better than here. You get to pick the chocolate (white, milk, or dark) that is literally melted into your espresso and milk…it lacks the bitter, almost metallic quality of commercial mochas (since it isn’t using dutch processed cocoa powder) and has a silky smooth finish. = ) For those without a sweet tooth, they have excellent sandwiches (pick your own charcuterie, brie, roasted tomatoes, the works) and cold brewed iced coffee.
